Birmingham - June 2024 Day 1

 8/6/24

I travelled to Birmingham, primarily for the National Conference of my trade union Prospect. I was there as a Conference Steward/Helper.

This was held at the International Convention Centre

After registering in my hotel I took a short walk to the Sommar Brewery & Taproom

I  then met up with my fellow stewards and collected my conference information.

Time now for some more pubs and walk to Wolf. Google Maps gave me a canalside route.

Just before I got to Wolf I noticed a place not on my list, The Barrel Store

I Was A Conductor On A Routemaster Bus

 1/6/24

My story starts on 25 May when I received a message from a friend asking if I could be conductor on a bus he was driving on 1 June. Having checked my diary was empty for the day, I replied yes.

The bus he was supposed to driving was a one man operated bus that had encountered a major mechanical problem a week previous and was not available.

Over the next few days we arranged all the details of how the job would work.

The bus was going to be Routemaster RM5, the first production RM, owned by Peter Hendy Lord hendy of Richmond Hill.

The actual job was a private hire from Cheam to Epsom Racecourse (Derby Day). Another bus and crew would work the return journey.

I met the bus with Richard driving it, in Claremont Road in Surbiton.

We then headed off for Cheam. We stopped in a layby near the pick up point as we had some spare time. I posed for a photo there.

We then made our way to residential street in Cheam to pick up our passengers.

Whilst waitng, Richard posed for a photo.

After dropping off our passengers I took more photos.

A most pleasnt few hours doing something a litlle bit different.
